Utah WordPress Meetup

There will be a meeting of WordPress geeks that will be held next week at my friend Jake Spurlock’s house. Here’s the info:

Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Topics: Anything that you want to talk about. I just got a new TV that we can hook up laptops too, so bring your lappy, and examples of what you are working on. If we do have a good response, I will see about moving to a larger location, but we should be ok… (I know, famous last words…)

I’ll be there along with Joseph Scott who works for Automattic and other geeks. Should be a lot of fun.

I just joined iFreelance today in order to try to get some freelance design work. I’d much rather get work through referrals and other people visiting my site. So far iFreelance seems to be easy enough. I’m competing with a lot of different people to get projects and that’s proving difficult. Managing multiple Twitter accounts

Now that Twitter is becoming a permanent fixture in the world of social networking people are starting to realize that they need a way to manage multiple Twitter accounts at the same time. I am one of those people and I have found a neat little program that helps with that. I usually use TweetDeck to manage my main account but for two other accounts I use twhirl. This little app is nice because it’s very functional without being to obtrusive. So far I’ve enjoyed using it.

Tweeting the Oscars

Since I am a comedian first and a designer second, I tend to read a lot of comedy blogs as well as design and social networking blogs. I was surprised tonight to find a post that combined these. Over on the comic’s comic there is a great post about how Twitter has changed the way we enjoy television events. I experienced it first with the Super Bowl this year. As I watched the game and the commercials I had fun tweeting about them, and also was able to enjoy the comments from the people I follow. It felt like I was watching the game with hundreds of other people. During the Grammy’s I was able to enjoy the same experience. Since I live in the Mountain Time Zone, I was delayed an hour from those people on the east coast and it was fun to see their tweets and see a hint of what was coming up.

On Sunday the Oscars will be broadcast in roughly the same way and I’m planning to be their with my laptop and enjoying the comments made by various other people as we watch the show. It’s amazing to see that this technology is allowing users to be connected on a level not really imagined just a few years ago. As other social networking technologies develop it will be interesting to see how this will change our relationship with others.

New social media tool?

Chat to Text is a start-up out of Florida. Looks like it may be some kind of pyramid scheme, but they are promising folks a lot of money to sign up with their affiliate program.

Their service would provide a box on any social networking site (Facebook, MySpace) where people could type messages and send them via text to your phone. You can text back and then you are essentially chatting. With Blackberry’s, iPhones, and other 3G devices, I don’t see how this provides anything that doesn’t already exist. But, best of luck to those guys.
